Well, that was unexpected. DC Studios recently started their new DCU (DC Universe) with Creature Commandos (2024-) which is receiving mostly strong reviews with a 80% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. They also released the (amazing!) Superman (2025) teaser trailer a couple days ago, which is being very well received.
With all going well for DC, you probably expected to hear next that Batman: The Brave and the Bold or the Paradise Lost show would be going forward at the studio. Instead, a Clayface film was announced.
The currently untitled Clayface film was just green lighted at DC Studios with a script written by Mike Flanagan. Filming is reportedly set to start early next year and has set a release date of September 11, 2026.
This is cool… and really weird. The only release dates known for DCU feature films are:
Superman - July 11, 2025
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - June 26, 2026
Untitled Clayface Film - September 11, 2026
Which means that right now the Clayface film is set to be the third DCU feature film. Clayface is a B-level Batman villain who I never would have thought in a million years would get his own solo project. Even though having this as your third film in your new cinematic universe is strange, it lines up with the track record of co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn. He loves taking unknown or little cared about characters and making them beloved. Hopefully the Clayface film will be good.
The untitled Clayface film releases into theaters September 11, 2026!
