Earlier today (04/30/2025), The Hollywood Reporter announced that Sgt. Rock, the recently confirmed DC Studios war film, has been canceled...for now.

The article states, "It is unclear why the project has been shut down, although an insider said it came down to the project’s scheduling needs of shooting outdoors."

Another source "raised the possibility that Guadagnino remained untested in the realm of action movies, and even though the budget was in the $70 million range, a paltry sum for comic book movies, higher-ups may have wavered in their confidence."

The article revealed some early plot details about the film, revealing that it was supposed to follow "Rock teaming with up with the female French Resistance fighter (is there any other kind?) to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, the spear used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, which in lore is said to have supernatural properties. They race to obtain it before the Nazis get their hands on it."

The article makes it clear that the film is not entirely canceled and that it "would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026," but it is scrapped for now.

The article also says that Colin Farrell, who portrayed the Penguin in the DC Elseworlds projects The Batman (2022) and The Penguin (2024), and is set to reprise the role in the upcoming untitled sequel to The Batman (2022), was set to play the titular character, and that the rest of of Sergent Rock's allies, known as Easy Company in the comics, were in the process of being cast.

Sgt. Rock was deep in pre-production for a planned summer 2025 shoot. The film had a script written by Justin Kuritzkes and was set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino.
